The Galson Story

Harjit Singh Galhotra

Harjit Singh Galhotra earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of Bhopal India in 1972 and embarked on a career in mechanical design. In 1976, he married his bride, Seema, who had earned her Bachelor of Arts from Punjab University, in Punjab, India. They immigrated to the “Land of Opportunity” in 1977. In Chicago, Harjit worked as a tool design engineer for a valve manufacturing company, making many improvements and innovations for his employer. Harjit and Seema wanted to live in a warmer climate – and moved to Texas in 1978, where Harjit was hired as Senior Tool Design Engineer for Dresser Industries. After over 13 years of success at Dresser, Harjit and Seema decided it was time to set out on their own.

With their life savings, they purchased 2.1 wooded acres of land in Cypress, a burgeoning suburb in northwest Houston, and a tractor.  Harjit himself used that tractor to clear the property and build a driveway.  They had a small storage building and a water well when they approached his bank officer at Questar Bank (now Comerica Bank) for an SBA loan.  After seeing their plan and the sheer determination with which they had come this far, the bank officer easily approved the loan.

Seema Galhotra

Harjit & Seema Galhotra opened GALSON AUTO & BODY at 12900 Cypress North Houston Road in Cypress, Texas in April 1993. The automotive repair shop started with a small office and six bays with two lifts.  A State Inspection station was quickly added, along with a small addition for paint & body work.  The goal was to provide their community with excellent service and products at reasonable prices.  In an effort to accommodate the busy working families in the area, they decided to set their service apart by being open longer, more convenient hours, including Saturdays.

Galson grew quickly – not only because of the rapid growth in their area – but also because they excelled at keeping their labor rates low and offering superior products at the lowest possible prices.  Galson also met the needs of students and seniors by offering additional discounts for them.  Early in 1998, the waiting area and offices were remodeled and expanded to better accommodate the customers.  While most customers appreciate courtesy rides to home or work while services are performed, every effort was made to create a comfortable and hospitable lobby for those customers who choose to wait.  Today, we offer WiFi, charging stations and gourmet coffee among other amenities.

Galson Auto & Body officially became Galhotra Enterprises, Inc., dba Galson Auto & Body in 2001. Harjit encouraged his son, Ravi to return to the family business and run the body shop after he graduated from University of Houston in 2000.  Very quickly thereafter, the paint and body business developed an esteemed reputation among customers and the major insurance companies which drove continued expansion. After 6 major expansions, there is now a total covered area of 25,000 square feet.  Additional remodeling and upgrades were performed following minor flooding experienced during Hurricane Harvey.

Just increasing space, however, is not enough; it is critical to develop with technology. Galson Auto & Body constantly invests in the latest analytical equipment, tools, products and continuing education required to maintain and repair all makes of cars.  ASE Certified technicians and staff combine their training and experience with cutting-edge technology and online resources in order to solve any repair problem. By sending photos and videos directly to customers, Galson uses all of today’s technology to ensure that they understand any necessary repairs or maintenance and have confidence in the integrity of the work.

Many of these processes have been initiated by the younger son, Roger, who earned his Corporate Communication and Finance degrees from University of Houston in 2007 and is now on the staff of Galson full time after working in the financial sector for several years. Roger has always enjoyed helping people accomplish their goals.  By paying close attention the needs of his clients, he helps deliver a finished product with excellent customer service.

The Galhotras and their staff value the community and their customers above all.  They solicit and respond to feedback in many ways.  In the Auto Shop lobby, you will find hundreds of Customer Satisfaction Survey postcards returned over the years that reflect the customers’ genuine experience.  Galson enjoys an over 90% customer satisfaction rating on Google, Yelp and with the Better Business Bureau.  In 2018, Galson received the “Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite” award from the nearby Barwood subdivision.

The owners and staff of Galson Auto & Body support local schools through donations, advertising and participation in community events. Harjit & Seema and their sons are active participants in their church, donating time and money to the church’s community.

Galson regularly contributes financially to many, many causes including Star of Hope Mission, Houston Public Media, American Heart Association, and Disabled American Veterans, just to name a few.

Galson is truly a family-run business – Harjit & Seema are proud to have both sons, Ravi and Roger, working alongside them as they head into the future and their employees are part of the Galson family. Galson Auto & Body is determined to continue to fulfill its goals both in providing needed products and services at reasonable prices and in supporting the community.
